Crap's Favorite Films: Requiem For A Dream (2000)

Yeah, my blog wasn't just dedicated to music. It was also dedicated to any media, such as movies. Yeah, I love movies, and I do believe they are my passion. So for something new, I'll start to talk about movies that are up there as my absolute favorites of all time. Starting with a very controversial one, Darren Arronofsky's Requiem For A Dream.

The film stars Jared Leto, before his 30 Seconds To Mars days, as Harry, a drug addict. His friend, Tyrone, played by  Marlon Wayans, and yes, THAT Marlon Wayans, is a drug dealer, and he also falls in love with Marion, played by Jennifer Connolly. However, the main plot kicks in with Harry's mother Sara, who's a lonely old widow, that begins to fall for diet pills, after believing she won something that'll make her go on a TV show, which was really, of course, a scam. However, the addictions for all of them kick in, and I will simply summarize everything as this: ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE, AND EVERYTHING FALLS TO COMPLETE SHIT. Harry and Tyrone lose their drug money, Marion has to prostitute for drugs, and Sara, well, loses her sanity..

There is a reason why this is considered the most depressing movie ever, and that's why it's so awesome, because it doesn't shy away from showing the REALITY of what addiction can do. This isn't some Captain Planet shit where the message is in your face, this is WHAT happens when you mess with this kind of shit, and in the end, you don't get a happy ending.

All of the performances in this movie are amazing, as every single actor portrays each of these characters doomed to shit perfectly. Yes, even a Wayans brother does good in a serious role. However, the main young three don't even compare to what Ellen Burnstyn pulls off. Her performance in this is absolute PERFECTION, and one of my favorite performances for anything. Every single scene she's in just great, because she WILL have you either frightened, or even crying for that matter. What adds to this is that she gets the worst of everything in this movie, all because she was scammed, and she wanted was the attention from her son, who was too busy getting high and selling her TV.

The movie is also one of the most frightening things you'll ever see, because again, this movie SHOWS everything the characters go through, and I mean, EVERY. LITTLE. THING. You can feel the tension of the movie, plus everything these characters have to feel, and what they have to suffer through, because of their choices. Probably the most terrifying scene of this movie involves Sara hallucinating her televison coming to life, which ends with a fridge eating her. No, I'm not kidding, a fridge comes to life and eats her. Don't worry, that fridge IS scary as shit. BTW, why did she have to lose to Roberts that year?

What adds to this is the cinematography and editing. Of course, the editing is what the film is known for, most notably, during the drug scenes. The cinematography is also great in this, especially with the same drug scenes. But when it's not used for that, it's used most effectively with all of the most most frightening scenes in the movie, and heck, both are used PHENOMENALY to convey all of the emotions in this characters.

Finally, the score in this movie is great. Of course, you might know the theme song for the movie, for that one song used in EVERY SINGLE FAKE MOVIE TRAILER MADE BY WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER. Seriously, they don't even use the version in this movie, it's just a remix from a Two Towers trailer. However, there are other memorable tracks on this, especially the score in the finale.

Speaking of the finale, every single factor I've praised in this movie; perfectly COME TOGETHER in the last 10 minutes in this movie. Like I said, everything falls to Shit, and during the last 10 minutes, YOU WILL SEE ALL OF IT FALL, for one of the most intense, frightening, disturbing, depression, and MESMERIZING endings ever created, all thanks to everything I mentioned. But I warn you, it's beyond disturbing.

So yeah, this film shows why Arronofsky is one of my favorite directors ever. He can create HORRIFYING images through great stories. Every single factor works great in this movie, and heck, it can honestly make you never do drugs altogether, though that wasn't the point of the film. But what matters is, this shit will fuck you up, that's why it's one of my favorite movies ever.
